BARRISTERCPD For the New Practitioner Programme (NPP)

Welcome to the New Practitioner Programme (NPP) information page on Barrister Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

The NPP period spans three years, commencing from the 1st of January of the calendar year following your initial practice as a barrister. This applies regardless of whether you served a probationary period in chambers, was squatting, were a tenant, or assumed a position as an employed barrister. It is important to note that these three years must be full calendar years. To fulfil the NPP requirements, you are expected to complete forty-five hours of CPD within the three-year period. This allocation should include a minimum of nine hours dedicated to advocacy training and at least three hours focused on ethics. The Circuits and the Inns offer courses in both advocacy and ethics, and it is not mandatory to attend training sessions exclusively at your respective Inn or Circuit. Throughout the year, the Circuits and Inns organise multiple courses to facilitate your CPD progress. We strongly advise adopting a structured approach to your CPD during the NPP, spreading out your required activities over the three-year period. Avoiding a last-minute rush and ensuring timely completion is paramount. Particularly, it is recommended that you prioritise the completion of your advocacy training requirements early on in the NPP timeline. To track your CPD activity, it is essential to maintain a comprehensive record. Please utilise the NPP Record Card to document your CPD engagements and retain this record for a minimum of three years after your NPP period concludes. During the annual Practising Certificate renewal process, it is mandatory to declare that you are maintaining your CPD obligations. This declaration forms part of the Authorisation to Practice procedure. While you are not routinely required to submit your NPP development activity record, please be aware that you may be selected for a spot check, during which you may be requested to submit your NPP Record Card for review. We hope this information provides you with a clear understanding of the NPP requirements and guidelines for Barrister CPD. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
